Half the time, I can’t find my own stories on this platform, so how are you lovely people supposed to find them?

So have an index!

I’ve arranged it by topic — for now, at least. I’ll try to keep it as updated as possible!

Recently, I saw that McDonalds are gonna stop supplying hard plastic toys in their kids’ meals in the UK and Ireland.

This was due to a petition from two smol eco-warriors, who were annoyed at the lack of recyclable-ness.

And good on them. We all need to be working on cutting down on the amount of plastic we use.

But when I heard the news, I wasn’t entirely happy.

Of course, I was happy that there’d be less plastic thrown away and ending up in landfill or the water system!

…But I still had some reservations.

Because I knew how much it would hurt a lot of kids whose families are on low incomes.

Yes, you read that right. Those of you who know will know — those…

…Just some random thoughts from when I finally got around to watching Avengers: Age of Ultron. Enjoy!

  • Yay, more Hawkeye! Still not enough, but when you’re a Hawkeye fan, you take what you can get
  • They need to make Clint deaf, like he is in the comics.
  • This version of Pietro & Wanda… meh. I prefer the X-men versions. Where they get to be mutants, and also Magneto’s children (comics be weird sometimes.)
  • Really under-utilising Pietro here
  • This guy’s OK, but I’m going with Evan Peters as my fave Pietro

‘Seriously. Who is the author kidding? This book is about the Manson murders.’

The Loki season finale…

OK, I’m done.

No.

Wait-

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

…OK, now I’m done.

This is still a SPOILER-free zone, but there will be a SPOILER section at the end, which will be clearly labelled, OK? OK

Oh, and, as per usual, it doesn’t count as a SPOILER if it’s in a trailer. And Queer IDs aren’t SPOILERS.

First off — that clock somehow got creepier.

I didn’t think that was possible, but somehow we managed it.

Maybe that was the purpose behind the hotel-from-The-Shining aesthetic at the TVA this whole time — to warn us that there was something creepy af lurking in there!

Speaking of aesthetics — the whole gold-veined-castle chic was really pretty and really gothicky. 10/10, would redecorate bedroom if I thought I could pull it off.

Now, Marvel — didn’t we have discussions about you providing me with too much ammo for existential crises?

Because this last episode…

When I was a kid, Chernobyl was the reason people couldn’t sell their livestock.

I live over 1000 miles away from the site of the Chernobyl disaster. I was born years after the explosion.

But when I was a kid, Chernobyl was the reason people couldn’t sell their livestock.

The restrictions on sheep farmers were only lifted in 2012.

Beyond that, I knew very little.

I think, in my mind, I imagined some sort of cross between Aberfan and 9/11. A chilling thought in itself, really.

Over the years, I understood a little more, but the impact was still hard to imagine — until it was…

Episode 5 of Disney+’s Loki was freaking awesome.

Once again, this is a SPOILER-free zone, and yes, I’m an episode behind.

So please reciprocate the SPOILER-free-ness cos I haven’t seen the last episode yet!

Two caveats to SPOILER-free:

1. If it’s in a trailer, it’s fair game

2. Queer IDs are not SPOILERS.

I really enjoyed this episode.

I couldn’t help but feel that a whole series based around this episode would be something I could get on board with.

Give me 6 hours of Loki literally arguing with themselves against a backdrop that uses a post-apocalyptic wasteland aesthetic, and I would be there!

I think that’s partly because of the potential for character-driven-ness, partly because of the banter, and partly because of the batpoop elements that we get in the best ways in this episode.

(I love batsh**…

There’s a couple of random things about writing that I’ve realised lately while working on my Work-In-Progress (WIP.)

I dunno whether this is me becoming more self-aware of my patchwork writing process -

(I write in snippets and then attempt to stick them together… with varying results)

- or whether everyone knows/has realised these things and I’m just now catching up (let me know!), but I figure’d I’d blog about them anywho! 😅

‘The Writer Diaries: 4 Random Realisations About Writing’
‘The Writer Diaries: 4 Random Realisations About Writing’
Image: author’s own, made with Canva. (2 clarifications — 1. ‘The Writer Diaries’ part is ‘cos the title is longer on my blog, Dora Reads, where this post first appeared. 2. In the UK, it is indeed spelled ‘realisations,’ with an S, not a Z.)

1. The weird exposition is actually my characters explaining my story to me

…Because I have literally no idea what’s going on, tbh.

So when they’re like, “The reason why this is happening is because…” it’s ‘cos they realise I don’t know.

And they have to explain it to me. (And I can take it out of anything resembling a final draft!)

I also sometimes write snippets that are more like explanations of something — like one of the characters’ art pieces and what they’re typically like — rather than a piece of actual prose.

And I figure this is stuff…
