Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is facing a ban in several countries due to the inclusion of America Chavez — an openly Lesbian Latinx heroine with two mothers.

At time of writing, the film has been confirmed as banned in Saudi Arabia and Egypt, with reports of possible bans in Kuwait and Qatar.

These are countries where LGBTQ+ people are often persecuted, and have limited rights.

So, as Benedict Cumberbatch himself has said, it’s hardly a surprise. But it is disappointing.

Disney have refused, so far, to censor the LGBTQ+ content in the film in order for it to be seen in these countries. Which is… actually pretty awesome of them.

I hope they hold strong, like they did for The Eternals, because this is something that needs to happen — Queer people exist, we are not a dirty secret, and we are not sinful. Deal with it.
