I think in an ideal world meritocracy would work, unfortunately we don't live in an ideal world, and inherited wealth and power inevitably win out, regardless of how industrious or not we are.

(Also, I feel like both industriousness and idleness are fairly common parts of speech - maybe it's just in the UK, or maybe it's my penchant for talking like a Victorian dictionary! Lol.)
