It is; I've heard similar stories about Native and Indigenous kids in places like the US and Canada being beaten or otherwise punished for speaking their own languages. I'm sure there's plenty of other examples out there - language is a vital target in cultural oppression.

Language politics are A Thing here, and I'm not sure there's a comment section - or a mental/emotional energy supply - big enough to explain it all! Lol.
