From time to time, when the world seems especially harsh and bleak, I like to re-read The Crow by James O’Barr.

The Crow is a gaping wound in book form, and I love it; truly a masterpiece of pain, in a gothic sweep of beauty.

And, despite how utterly hopeless and graphic the book is (heads-up: Content Warnings for everything,) it never fails to make me feel hopeful.

I guess it’s why I love World War One poetry and emo music — there’s a special kind of comfort in the darkest things, especially when they’re somehow oh-so beautiful.
