I don’t really understand how that works—I thought earnings on Medium were related to reads. I hope some smart person has figured it out and will share with us in the comments how it works!

It's related to member read time - so three people who read for half an hour each will likely earn you more than three people who read you for a minute each, unless the half hour readers read thousands of stories a month and the minute readers have only read your story at all in that month, and then it gets complicated!
