A mission fic is a piece of fanfiction which is based around an episodic-style storyline —not dissimilar to a monster-of-the-week/murder-of-the-week style vibe.

So they take one particular ‘mission’ for the group, or for individual characters — for example, ‘go raid this villain’s base’ or ‘get this plot-device item from this secure location,’ — and base the story around that.

They’re usually (but not always) written about fandoms which involve a lot of action/adventure hijinks — especially if they contain characters who are in the military, or are military-adjacent.

All of which means that superhero fanfiction, in particular, is the perfect canvas for mission fics.

…And you know how much I love superheroes! 😅

If a piece of media has got stuff blowing up, and something resembling a dedicated group or agency, you’ll probably find a mission fic for it somewhere!
